The west of Hainan Province, closing to Northern Gulf and Southeast Asian countries,is very rich in resources. The Northern Gulf is the main place of production for offshore oil and an important fishery. Danzhou is the major place to produce mango and rubber. In addition, west coast also kept many primeval forests, including Jianfeng ridge and Bawang ridge which is the national forest protected area.
The climate here is different from other places of Hainan. The weather is drier. It belongs to tropical monsoon climate and the wet and dry seasons are distinct. The rainfall mainly takes place in the second half of the year between June and November.
Tour and Attractions
West coast tourist area mainly includes three counties: Oriental, Yuedong and Changjiang. Tourists here can visit many beautiful types of scenery.
Maogong Mountain (毛公山)
Maogong Mountain is also called Baoguo Mountain. It lies on the Baoguo farm, Yuedong County, which is 28 kilometers away from the city. This mountain is about 630 meters high and the relative height is about 320 meters. There is a huge stone protruding in the central part of the mountain. The shape looks like Chinese former chairman Maozedong lying on the ground. The face is 105 meters long and 56 meters wide. No matter which direction you notice, this shape looks realistic.
Behind the Maogong Mountain, there is a camp named “Red Oriental Village”. In front of the mountain, another camp called “Liberation Village”. Both of them appertain to Li people. The surroundings are wonderful. Tourists here can visit many evergreen, spectacular waterfall and several groups of stone scenes. Li and Miao people live there, so this area is full of strong ethnic atmosphere.
Emperor Cave (皇帝洞)
Emperor Cave belongs to the key nature reserve in Hainan. It lies under Wule ridge of Wangxia Village, Li Autonomous County, which is 60 kilometers away from the city.
Emperor Cave is surrounded by beautiful hills and rivers. Actually it’s a large limestone cave. The mouth of the cave is near the Nanyao River. Looking from a distant place, the Emperor Cave looks like a big water buffalo opening its mouth. The cave is 60 meters wide, 130 meters deep and 25 meters high. The total area is about 7,731 square meters, which can accommodate more than 10,000 people. The bottom of cave is higher in the east and lower in the west, leaning to the south. The cave hall is arch. Entering
the mouth of cave, tourists can see many dancing swallows flying from one side to another and twittering all the time. There are a variety of colorful stalactites in the cave. Some of them look like pots, plates, boards, pillars, knives, wimbles, pillows and matting; some look like animals, such as elephants, ox, sheep, chickens, dogs, tigers, deer, dragons and phoenixes; the others looks like fruit, including peaches, pears, apples. All the shapes look as if they were carved artificially.
In front of the cave, a boulder is hanging in the sky with trepidation. It is extremely firm. It is known as “Golden Dragon Vacates”. On the southeastern side of the cave, there is a so-called “Traditional Wooden Armchair” which is 90 meters long. On both sides, two rows of stone soldiers stand still and a stone person sits in the chair, resembling an emperor in the throne. So this place called “Emperor Cave”.
Blue Ocean Hot Spring (蓝洋温泉)
Blue Ocean Hot Spring lies in Blue Ocean County, Danzhou City. It is 12 kilometers away from Danzhou City and 149 kilometers away from Haikou City. Blue Ocean Hot Spring belongs to a bigger spring in Hainan. The whole length is 6 kilometers and the width is 500 meters. At the range of 2 square kilometers, there are over 10 natural mouths of spring. The water flow every day can reach 2,000 tons and the temperature is between 43 and 84 centigrade. Bathing in the hot spring is good for health. Besides this spring, there are two other springs. One is a hot spring, and the other is a cold spring.
