Chinese Food, Chinese Culture, and Shopping in China

Chinese Cuisine and Food

Do you love food as I do? The articles below re-tells many of my eating adventures through my travels in China.

Chengdu Airport Hotel Dinner - On the street, around the hotels are hustlers, people who try to get you to go spend money at certain businesses around the area such as restaurants, massage parlors, hotels, bars, and taxi services. It really is annoying as hell.

Delicious Inexpensive Food - Just down below the building where we live, there's a lineup of dozens of restaurants, serving a wide variety of foods. Mostly sichuan food of course. I randomly pick one of the restaurants specializing in serving fish.

Guilin Food and Dining - I got into a taxi cab, and asked the driver where are the good restaurants around Guilin city. He told me that there is a street in Guilin called "Nan Huan Lu" or "Nan Huan street" that is a very popular street where the local Guilin residents frequent.

Guilin Hao Da Ma Restaurant - This restaurant is located on the top floor of the Ba Gui Da Sha building on Zhong San road in Guilin, and it's a popular restaurant where the local residents frequent.

Harbin Lao Shang Hao Dumpling King - There's a dumpling restaurant called "Lao Shang Hao Jiao Zi Wang" that is located at ZhongYang Street #90, which is only a 5 minute walk heading south from Tianzhi hotel, where I stayed.

Haikou Seafood Restaurant - My wife and I went out for seafood on our 2nd day in Haikou – traveling in Hainan Island, of course we have to go have some seafood, and we sure had a lot of seafood in Hainan.

Li River Cruise Lunch - For the $288 yuan we paid for our meal, we got to taste the fresh catches from the Li River. Our meal came with 2 steamed fish caught from the Li River, deep fried tiny crabs from the Li River, shrimp, steamed tofu with pork, a soup, and some stir fried vegetables.

Peking Duck at Quanjude Restaurant - 1 The QuanJuDe Peking Duck restaurant is situated in a large building – it spans 4 floors, and is very nicely decorated. Upon entering the restaurant, you are greeted by several hostesses.

Peking Duck at Quanjude Restaurant - 2  I was given a menu, and on the very first page - "Peking Roast Duck - $168 rmb". Of course, I came for the duck, and it's the duck that I ordered.

Xian Bamboo Buffet - During my travel to Xian this past summer in mid June, I had dinner at an all you can eat buffet located near Xian city center called Bamboo Buffet (Qian Jia Chu Liang Wang).

Xian Lovbody Restaurant - In my last day in Xian, after touring the Tang Paradise, I had dinner at a restaurant across the road from my hotel called Lovbody (Bao Tian Xia 包天下), which is located on BeiDajie.

Chinese Culture

Chinese Calligraphy Art - Calligraphy in China is the art of writing with a chinese brush. It is unique to Chinese culture, and a few other countries influenced by ancient Chinese culture.

Chinese New Year Celebration - 1 This is a time where families gather and spend time (alot of time) eating, chatting, and catching up on past and recent events.

Chinese New Year Celebration - 2 After spending several hours at Dazhou Square, we all headed back home. It was almost dinner time again.

Chinese New Year Celebration - 3 The Chinese New Year celebration party 春节联欢晚会 (concert) is held once a year, right on new year's eve.

Chinese New Year Celebration - 4 The first day of Chinese new year is spent much like new year's eve. Large family gathering and dining together, and followed with a late night round of fireworks.

Chinese New Year Decoration - It's almost that time of the year again - the busiest and craziest festive season in Chinese culture where an entire nation goes nuts on the last day of the Lunar calendar.

Chinese New Year Fireworks - It has been many years since the Chinese government has banned public use of fireworks until Chinese new year in 2006.

Year of the Golden Pig - Many Chinese couples planned (or desperately tried) to have a baby born in 2007, as a golden pig.

Chinese Wedding - 1 I am attending one of my oldest friend’s wedding in Chonqing, which is about a two and half hour bus ride from Neijiang.

Chinese Wedding - 2 The original plan was for Tim to show up at the Bride's door at around 9:30. Of course, things were running a bit behind, and it was about 10:30am when the best men and the groom were at the front doors of the bride’s home.

Chinese Wedding - 3 To see his new bride, Tim had to perform several tasks demanded by the bridesmaids.

House Renovation in China - Housing is quite different in China compared to America.

Poor Ethics in China - If you stay in China for long periods of time, like me, you will undoubtly encounter many "unpleasant" situations.

Shopping In China

Guilin Ba Gui Da Sha Mall - On the west side of the Zhong San road, there is a large shopping plaza called Ba Gui Da Sha. The first few floors are full with small clothing shops.

Guilin Night Market Shopping - On Zhong Shan road (by the City Center Square section), there is a nightly market place.

Harbin Shopping - ZhongYang street is located at the heart of Harbin and it is one of the most popular shopping and relaxing destinations for locals and foreigners alike.

Haikou Shopping - Ming Zhu Guang Cang (People’s Cultural Plaza - that’s my translation of it.) is a popular place where local people like to frequent.

Wangfujing Beijing - Most of WangFuJing Street is off limits to cars, and only accessible on foot or by bicycle. The street is kept sparkling clean, and free of trash.

Xian Zhongda Shopping Center - In China's society today, there is great disparity between the wealthy and the poor. The rich are extremely rich and the poor can get just by.

Xidan Shopping in Beijing - Xidan shopping district is probably the most popular shopping district in Beijing - it's where the local Beijing people go shopping for the real deals and bargains.
