It was picked because of its close proximity to Hong Kong, and it was created as an experimental ground for capitalism in China. The special economic zone idea was a great success, and Shenzhen is now one of the largest cities in the Pearl River Delta region with a population of over 13 million (about 9 million are a mobile population, mainly farmers who gave up farming to become labourers).
The city became one of the largest manufacturing bases in the world. Shen Zhen became a major manufacturing and export base of electrical appliances, garments, toys, jewellery, food, building materials, leather, and furniture in China.
