The city of Macau is an interesting conundrum. Much of the city features a Mediterranean feel, due to the colonization by the Portuguese. The other parts of the city are uniquely Chinese and blend elegantly with the European designs. While Macau has become known as the gambling capital of China, you will find much more to do in the city than simply roll the dice.
Cheoc Van Beach
If you want easy beach access, this is it. Located just outside of town, you will find changing rooms, toilets, lifeguards and more. This beach is one of the prime destinations for families looking for a little aquatic fun in the area. The beach, itself, is pleasant, while the waters are safe for swimming and even snorkeling.
Guia Fort
The fort dates back to the early 1600s, built to defend the border with China. The fort and the lighthouse are worth more than a casual visit. The lighthouse dates back to 1865 and is the oldest one on the coast of China, while the Chapel was used to sound storm warnings for the town. Numerous tours are available that will take you to the fort, allowing you several hours to explore the area and visit the various exhibits. The air raid shelter is a great place for a look at WWII fortifications and war preparations.
Ruins of St. Pauls
Kun lam Temple
This is the oldest temple in Macau and one of the most unique. Build in the early 1600's, the temple is dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kun lam. The temple was also the site of the first treaty signing between China and the US, in 1844. Historical pictures and scrolls, fortunetellers and worshippers throng the temple on a daily basis.
Macau Tower
The Macau Tower is one of the tallest freestanding structures in the world, coming in 10th in a list. Visitors will find observation decks (58th and 60th floors), as well as numerous restaurants within the tower. The 60th floor boasts the 360 Café, while the 180 Lounge is located on the 59th floor.
You can even take part in extreme climbing on the tower, taking you to the very top. None of the extreme tours is appropriate for children or those with a fear of heights. Located at the bottom of the tower, you will find the Convention and Entertainment Center, providing more information about what to see and do in the city. |
